“I looked at your website and you didn’t have a climbing section” – Ethan
So I kinda sorta fell ass backwards into climbing….literally. My first time ever climbing was in March of 2022. I had no idea what I was doing, but my friends quickly taught me enough to take the belay tests. Top rope test went off no problem, but trouble came in the autobelay test. I safely clicked in, said the right things, and ascended up the wall. The only thing I had left was to come down. My friends and the nice staff person were encouraging me to just let go- it’s safe- the system will let you descend safely- you're fineeee. What did I do? I only let go with my hands. My feet did not budge. Falling head first, ass up, I flipped upside down.
Anyway, I think it is safe to say I’ve grown a lot as a climber over the past few years, but more importantly my love for the sport only continues to grow. I still consider myself to be a newb- especially when it comes to outdoor climbing, so I don’t have a ton of climbing route info for ya’ll yet. However here are some lil notes on the places I have climbed at!
Note: Mountain Project is a great free resource for climbing in your area! I also have a few local guidebooks that I find to be awesome resources as well :)
Route Types: Single Pitch Sport
Region: Paradise Valley
Note(s):
No dogs from the reg. access approach! Dog ppl need to access via. old access, but the owner of land easement that gets beefy about dogs on his land lives in view of the crag- so maybe bring the pup to a different crag.
Was hecka smokey the times I've been & it is pretty in the sun- it gets hot quick.
Some real chill routes for beginner climbers :)
River is real close to jump into post climbing!
Route Types: Single Pitch Sport
Region: Bozeman
Note(s):
Such an easy place for a sneaky outdoor climbing vibe after work.
My first outdoor lead was here!
Route Types: Sport
Region: Bozeman
Note(s):
Approach is about a mile to the first wall (Frat Boy). Flat while it follows the highway and then pretty steep up to the crags.
Super close to town (think this could be a good sneaky link post work vibe)
Routes range from 5.6 to 5.13b so there is something for every skill level!
About 1.25 mi from parking to crag.
Great spot for beginners!! (5.6-5.9 range climbing)
Definitely gets a lot of sun so wear your sunscreen kiddos
I've heard this crag can be pretty noisy being by the highway, but we only noticed noise when the train was coming by. Not sure if the lower crags get more highway noise though!
Routes:
Public Service Announcement 5.8 (6 bolts to anchor)
TR'd this! Think this was the overall fav route by the group I was with!
Public Enema 5.6 (4 bolts to anchor)
I don't think I did this one, but the gang said it was a chiller.

Public Enemy 5.7+ (4 bolts to anchor)
Lead this! Enjoyed it & thought it was a chill route to start the day on.

Lincoln Logs 5.9 (4? bolts to anchor)
Getting to the first bolt was spooking me so I bailed on leading & TR'd it after my homie Kira lead it! She was able to reach the first bolt manuevering around the lil tree on the left. First two bolts are pretty tricky & then climbs like a 5.7.

Legos 5.9 (6 bolts to anchor)
I lead this one! Felt comfy getting to the first bolt & found it to be a lil tricky in the mid section. Once past the tricky spot it feels like a 5.7ish

Route Types: Sport
Region: Helena
Note(s):
Montana women's climbing fest was here
I met two rad older ladies Meg & Kristin that were pioneers for climbing around here. Meg founded the climbing gym in Bozeman & Kristin (and her husband Bill) put up many of the routes in this very canyon!!
Super sick limestone walls
One untouched wall has some historic Pictographs on it #rad
Adjacent climbing area: Avalanche Gulch
Hellgate Campground is pretty close to both these crags!
My favorite crag I've been to!
Route Types: More Trad than Sport
Region: Bozeman
Note(s):
I think this might have been the first place I ever climbed outside. (We went for my 24th bday!)
I'm not even sure what route we were on, but it was a blast w/ the gang (Eth, Killa, Nath)
Route Types: Sport
Region: Butte(ish)
Note(s):
Honestly the only thing I remember about this trip was that I saw my first MT rattlesnake & we went to the ringing rocks.
There are quite a few sport routes here! We did TR, but I think there are quite a few bouldering routes here too!
